Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) believed he had only created one truly exceptional piece of furniture, and that was the coffee table. Despite his extensive design legacy, known for dynamic forms and organic materials, the Japanese-American artist and designer considered the Noguchi coffee table his singular success.
In 1944, Noguchi developed the initial version of this iconic coffee table as a variation of a piece he had previously designed for A. Conger Goodyear, former president of MoMA. According to design lore, industrial designer and magazine journalist George Nelson visited Noguchi while working on an article titled "How to Make a Table." Nelson found Noguchi working on a prototype that would eventually become the Noguchi coffee table. Nelson, who was the design director at Herman Miller, was so captivated by Noguchi's creation that he used it to illustrate his essay and convinced the renowned furniture manufacturer to produce it. Starting from 1948, the company did just that.
Art enthusiasts may notice a stylistic similarity between the sculptural base of the Noguchi table and the work of Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi. This connection has a reason behind it. A young Isamu Noguchi worked as Brancusi's assistant for several months in 1927 before embarking on his own extensive career. Although the coffee table was produced about 15 years after Noguchi left Brancusi's studio, its sinuous-shaped base reflects a resemblance to Brancusi's work. Additionally, it draws inspiration from the abstract sculptures Noguchi began creating in the 1940s while residing in New York City's Greenwich Village, where he initially conceived the table.
